Liposuction Richmond VA was introduced in 1982 and is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure. Liposuction is used to remove localized collections of fat throughout the body. Many of these areas of fat accumulation are resistant to exercise because of their specific biological characteristics. Once the excess fat is removed, one can enjoy a more balanced figure and improved fitting of clothing and bathing suits.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is of average weight for body size and has specific areas of extra fat. It is important that you have healthy, elastic skin which will shrink back after the fat is removed. Liposuction only removes fat and thus cannot remove excess skin laxity or surface irregularities. If your skin has lost its elasticity or you have contour deformities, you may be a candidate for a skin tightening procedure such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, buttock lift, or arm lift. Contour deformities may be improved with fat injections. Liposuction is performed through tiny, hidden incisions. A thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted through the incision. The cannula is attached either to a syringe or a vacuum device to suction the fat from the abdomen, back, legs, arms, buttocks, face, or neck.

Liposuction is usually performed on an outpatient basis. If a significant amount is removed, then overnight hospitalization may be required. Liposuction can be performed with regional anesthesia using the new Tumescent liposuction technique and deep sedation or general anesthesia can be used. Surgical time varies from 1 to 3 hours depending on the number of sites suctioned.

After the liposuction, you may wear a snug fitting compressive garment for three weeks. Swelling, discoloration, and discomfort may occur but will quickly disappear. Activities will be restricted for the first week. One can usually return to work in a week. Strenuous activity is restricted for two weeks.

The introduction of the tumescent liposuction technique has greatly reduced the complications of liposuction. Risks include fluid accumulation under the skin, temporary sensory changes, and contour irregularities.  Liposuction is not a substitute for a proper diet , regular exercise, nor is it a cure for obesity.
